Vestal rated #1 school district in Binghamton-Elmira area
Vestal Central School District continues to set the bar for the region according to “Buffalo Business First’s” rankings of Upstate New York school districts by academic performance. For the fifth straight year, Vestal topped the list of 40 public school districts reviewed in the academic areas of English/foreign language, mathematics, science and social studies. Of the school districts compared in the Binghamton-Elmira Area, according to the publication’s system, Vestal posted the best scores in English, math and social studies, and finished second only to one other area school district in science.
The rankings reflect the collective performance of each district's public schools from grades K - 12. According to the methodology used by “Buffalo Business First,” a total of 50 statistical indicators were analyzed to determine each district’s annual score. The rating formula analyzed four years of data from the New York State Education Department, covering the period from 2011 - 2014, and included graduation rates, high school exam scores and elementary/middle school test scores. The magazine’s website also indicated that each component of the formula was analyzed twice.“Buffalo Business First” included school districts in Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Delaware and Tioga counties as part of the Binghamton-Elmira area, and on its website stated that it has been releasing school district rankings for a different Upstate New York market each weekday since June 2. These academic standings will be combined into a master list of all Upstate New York school districts that meet the criteria for the ranking and released by "Business First" on June 19, 2015.
“Buffalo Business First” has issued annual performance ratings for Upstate New York school districts since 2011. It is owned by American City Business Journals, which has over 40 local business newspapers in U.S. cities across the country.
